SMART ISLAND DECLARATION

Endorse the Smart Islands Declaration

The Smart Islands Declaration outlines the challenges as much as the potential of islands to transition into a smart, sustainable and inclusive development paradigm. It was first drafted during the 1st Smart Islands Forum, held in Athens, on 21-22 June 2016 where the majority of EU islands were present.

European island administrations are invited to sign up to the Smart Islands Declaration and undertake the necessary steps to ensure its effective implementation at island level. We also welcome the endorsement of the Declaration by private, academic and civil society organizations, active both at island and EU scale, since broad stakeholder engagement is key in unleashing islands’ potential for smart and sustainable growth.
